Retail Video Resume: Show the Store Manager You’re Good With People

Retail applications mostly go through the same online form, and from the manager’s side they look alike. Name, availability, a few past jobs. What the form can’t show is the thing a store manager cares about most: will customers like dealing with you, and will you show up? A 60–90 second video answers both. It’s also one of the few ways to stand out when you have little or no work history yet.

What store managers listen for

The five prompts, written for retail

About 15 seconds each, one video.

1. Tell me about yourself

Experienced: “I’m [name]. I’ve worked [X] years in retail, mostly as a cashier and on the sales floor at a [type of] store in [city].”

First job: “I’m [name]. I’m [age/grade or ‘just finished school’], and I’m looking for my first job. I’ve [volunteered / helped at a family business / babysat], so I’m used to being responsible.”

2. Why do you want this kind of work?

“I like helping people find what they came in for. Somebody walking out happy is a good day.”

Or: “I like being busy. Time goes fast on the floor.”

3. Why should we hire you?

Proof: “I’ve been a key holder for a year and I open three days a week.” “I never came up short on my drawer.” “I’m the one my manager puts on returns because I stay calm.” Only what’s true.

4. What are you strongest at, and what are you working on?

“I’m strongest with customers. I’m working on visual merchandising.”

Or: “Strongest at stocking fast and neat. Working on being more confident at the register.”

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?

“Assistant store manager.” Or: “Managing a department.” Or, honestly: “Finishing school while working here.” Managers like a straight answer.

Close: “I can work [days, hours], I’m in [area], and I can start [date].”

Filming tips for retail

What not to show

  • Customers. Not in the background, ever.
  • Register screens, receipts, or anything with card or customer details.
  • Back rooms, stock rooms, or anything about a store’s security. Keep store layouts, cameras, and alarm panels off camera.
  • Your current store’s uniform or name tag if they don’t know you’re looking.
  • Complaints about past managers or customers. Keep it positive. The manager watching will picture you saying it about them.

No experience? A video matters more

If you’ve never had a job, there’s not much for a PDF to say. A short video shows you’re friendly, clear, and serious enough to make the effort. That’s most of what a manager is hiring for at entry level. Talk about school, sports, volunteering, a family business, or anything that shows you show up and work hard. New to all of this? Start with what a video resume is.

How it works on Seenly

  1. Sign up with Google or email.
  2. Build your draft: photo, name, city, the job titles you want, and the five prompts.
  3. Add one video. Record it right on the page or upload it from Photos (.mp4 or .mov). Aim for 60–90 seconds; the limit is 2 minutes.
  4. Go live when you’re ready. Seenly Pro is $7.99/month with a 7-day free trial. Going live gives you a public link like seenly.live/u/your-name, share buttons, and a pin on the talent map. Until then your draft stays free and unlisted, and no card is needed.

FAQ

Can I make a retail video resume with no work experience?

Yes. Talk about school, volunteering, sports, or helping at home or a family business, plus your availability. Entry-level managers hire attitude and reliability.

Where do I put a video link on an online retail application?

Use the “website,” “portfolio,” or “additional information” field if there is one. Also put it at the top of your printed resume.

Should I record my video in the store?

No. Record at home. Stores have customers, screens, and security details you don’t want in the shot.

How long should a retail video resume be?

60 to 90 seconds. Seenly takes one video up to 2 minutes.

Is Seenly free?

Your draft and video are free and unlisted. A public link and a pin on the talent map come with Seenly Pro: $7.99/month with a 7-day free trial. No card until you go live.
