What Is a Video Resume? (And When It Actually Helps)
A video resume is a short video, usually 60–90 seconds, of you talking to the camera about who you are, the work you do, and why someone should hire you. It doesn’t replace your PDF. It goes with it, so the person hiring can see and hear you before they call.
When a video resume helps
- Jobs where trust and people skills matter: trades, healthcare, customer-facing roles, office work, anywhere you talk to people all day.
- You’re better in person than on paper. Plenty of good people don’t write a great resume.
- You’re changing careers or have a gap. Thirty seconds of you explaining it beats a hiring manager guessing.
- You speak more than one language. Show it.
- You’re reaching out directly. A link in a text or email gives a super, manager, or recruiter a reason to call you back.
When it doesn’t
- The application says no links or extra materials. Follow the instructions.
- The employer uses blind or anonymized hiring. Some do this on purpose to reduce bias. Respect it.
- The video is bad. Dark, shaky, noisy, or four minutes long does more harm than no video. Keep it short and clean.
- Nobody clicks. Some people won’t open a link. That’s why the first 15 seconds should say your name, your job, and why you’re worth a call.
Video resume vs. PDF vs. LinkedIn
| PDF resume | Video resume | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Dates, titles, certs, a quick scan | Work history, connections, being found by recruiters | How you talk, your confidence, your personality |
| Shows | What you’ve done | What you’ve done and who you know | Who you are |
| Time to read | Seconds to skim | A minute or two | 60–90 seconds |
| Weak spot | Everyone looks the same on paper | Many trades and frontline workers aren’t active on it | Needs a link, and a bad video hurts |
Use all three if you can. The video is the one that makes someone want to talk to you.
How to share a video resume
Don’t attach a video file. Big files bounce, and many application forms won’t take them. Send a link. On Seenly, going live gives you one link, like seenly.live/u/your-name, with your video, titles, and city on a page that opens on any phone. Employers can also use the Request interview button on your page to email you.
- Paste it in the “website” or “portfolio” box on applications.
- Put it at the top of your PDF resume and in your email signature.
- Text it after a phone call or a job fair.
- Add it to your LinkedIn featured section.
How it works on Seenly
- Sign up with Google or email.
- Build your draft: photo, name, city, the job titles you want, and the five prompts.
- Add one video. Record it right on the page or upload it from Photos (.mp4 or .mov). Aim for 60–90 seconds; the limit is 2 minutes.
- Go live when you’re ready. Seenly Pro is $7.99/month with a 7-day free trial. Going live gives you a public link like
seenly.live/u/your-name, share buttons, and a pin on the talent map. Until then your draft stays free and unlisted, and no card is needed.

FAQ
How long should a video resume be?
60 to 90 seconds is the sweet spot. Seenly takes one video up to 2 minutes.
Do employers actually watch video resumes?
Some do and some don’t. Make it easy: one link, a short video, and your name and job in the first few seconds. Keep sending your PDF too.
Is a video resume a replacement for a regular resume?
No. Send both. The PDF covers dates and details; the video shows who you are.
Is Seenly free?
Building your profile and video is free, and your draft stays unlisted. To get a public link and a spot on the talent map, you Go live with Seenly Pro: $7.99/month with a 7-day free trial. No card is needed until you Go live.
Who can see my video?
While it’s a draft, nobody else can open it. After you Go live, anyone with your link can watch it, and your profile can appear on Seenly’s talent map and in search engines.
